THE WEIGHT OF TURNING

Curated by  Antonia Caicedo Holguin and Siphiwe–Nokukhanya Mnguni

Sarabande Foundation is proud to present ‘The Weight of Turning’; a group exhibition curated by Sarabande residents Antonia C.H and Siphiwe - Nokukhanya Mnguni.  The exhibition showcases new and recent work by emerging contemporary artists who explore the essence of creating work in unparalleled times. Featuring works in ceramics, painting, objects and fashion, jewellery the exhibiting artists consider what it means to create from a place of instability.

Taking the concept of a dancer’s pirouette as a starting point the show explores how as people we are often unbalanced or untethered, but need to find ways to ground ourselves. How do artists find space and energy to make artwork in a world that is more and more off kilter.

Addressing themes of care, gender, movement, diasporic identities, grief and social structures, these eleven artists explore how these affect individual and collective challenges that they face in society.

This is Caicedo Holguin’s and Mnguni’s debut project working together. Both artists explore the boundaries of figurative painting in their individual artistic practices but coming from two very different places. For this show they extend the themes they explore into the curation of the artists exhibited, the works in the show are threaded into one story.
